Division prevails once again in the EU, just a day before the new meeting of European Energy Ministers
Only a few hours before the new meeting of the European Energy Ministers and with natural gas prices having skyrocketed, the Commission and EU member states seem to disagree on how to stop the crazy course of prices.
Despite the fact that the European officials of the 15 EU member states, including Greece, have signed a letter in which they appeal to the Commission for a price ceiling on natural gas imports, Ursula Von der Leyen is nowhere to be seen willing to do them a favor, according to Politico. The Commission sticks to its view on a cap on Russian natural gas.
What is reported by Politico is also reinforced by the statements of the Energy Commissioner, Country Simpson which insists on imposing a ceiling on Russian natural gas but on the condition that it will continue to be attractive when exported to Europe.
“I firmly believe that we need a price ceiling for all Russian gas imports at a level that still makes it attractive to export to Europe,” he said.
At the same time, the European Commissioner pointed out that the EU is ready to introduce a separate ceiling especially for natural gas used to generate electricity.
“The aim is to limit the impact of high gas prices on electricity markets,” he pointed out and added: “This cap should be set at such a level that it does not increase overall gas consumption.”
“In order to shield consumers from extremely high prices, we already proposed in September emergency intervention in the electricity market. This will generate revenue to support households and businesses from the profits of companies that generate low-cost electricity and the solidarity contribution from fossil fuel companies,” Country Simpson concluded.
