“Our reaction to Russia’s recognition of the results will be very harsh,” the Ukrainian president stressed
The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky issued a fresh warning to Russia of a “very tough” response from Ukraine if Moscow annexes four Ukrainian regions after the mock referendums described by Kyiv and the West.
The statement released by Zelensky’s office after a telephone conversation with the Italian prime minister did not refer to a ceremony to be held tomorrow, Friday in the Kremlin, in which the president Vladimir Putin will sign agreements for the integration of the occupied territories of Ukraine into Russia.
“They (referendum votes) are insignificant and do not change reality. Ukraine’s territorial integrity will be restored. And our reaction to Russia’s recognition of the results will be very harsh,” Zelensky said.
It was not immediately clear whether Zelensky spoke with Prime Minister Mario Draghi before or after the Kremlin announced Friday’s ceremony.
The authorities in the Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson they held referendums on joining Russia and claimed that the majority of residents were in favor of this move.
The West and Kyiv have rejected the referendums and have warned that they will not recognize the annexation of these territories by Russia.
