France: Russian soldier seeking asylum will write his testimony in a book

by

“ZOV, the man who said no to war”, will be the title of the book

A Russian soldier, wounded during the invasion of Ukraine, who fled his country to seek asylum in Francewill publish his testimony in a book, the publishing house Albin Michel announced today.

“ZOV,” subtitled “The Man Who Said No to War,” is set to be released in November “in 13 countries,” according to Albin Michel.

The story comes from the “war diary” of Pavel Filatiev, originally published on the Russian social network Vkontakte.

In it the soldier denounced the miserable condition of the Russian troops, ill-equipped, ill-trained, undermined by disorder, negligence and corruption.

Pavel Filatiev, 34, was a paratrooper who re-enlisted last year in the Crimea-based 56th Airborne Troops Regiment after briefly returning to civilian life.

Severely injured in one eye, he asked to be discharged for health reasons, but his request was not accepted. He then deserted, wandered from town to town, and then ended up leaving Russia for France.

In an interview with AFP in late August, Pavel Filatiev described the army as “terrorised”, with the vast majority of soldiers opposed to the attack on Ukraine, but unable to say so openly.

“All rights to the book will be donated to NGOs that help victims of the war in Ukraine,” Albin Michel said.
