Russia and the West have half-heartedly blamed each other in recent days for the pipeline sabotage. The United Nations Security Council will discuss the issue today at Moscow’s request.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Thursday that it was still too early to assess who might be behind the gas leaks due to explosions at the Nord Stream 1 and 2 undersea pipelines, expensive infrastructure critical to supplying the U.S. of Europe with natural gas.
“In terms of the attack and the damage to the pipelines, I think right now there is too much scenario. But frankly, until a full investigation is conducted, no one will be able to determine exactly what happened for sure,” Mr. Austin said during a press conference in Hawaii.
The US defense secretary said he discussed the leaks in the pipelines with his Danish counterpart last Wednesday and that Morgen Budskov “indicated to me that it will be several days before he has put together a team suitable to look at the points and try to ascertain what exactly happened.”
“Until we have more information, or are able to do further analysis, we will not speculate as to who may have been responsible,” Mr Austin added.
