Russia – Putin: At noon the “tsarist” fiesta for the annexation of the 4 regions of Ukraine

by

The annexation ratification ceremony is expected to be bright, but frontline defeats, nuclear threats and social unrest over conscription are clouding the picture.

Brilliant, “imperial”, expected to be at 3 pm in Moscow the ratification ceremony for the annexation of four of its regions Ukrainian (Lugansk and Donetsk, Zaporizhia, Kherson) after the self-proclaimed referendums condemned by Ukraine and the West as a fraud.

An indication of the Kremlin’s intention to mark the occasion are the celebrations, which are expected to take place, with the municipal authorities of the Russian capital announcing the closure of roads in the city centre, mainly around the iconic Red Square, where there will be a platform.

The annexation ratification ceremony is expected to be imposing enough, however, defeats at the front, the Kremlin’s threats to use nukes, seen as a sign of desperation, and social uproar over conscription (with Putin himself admitting “mistakes” ) blur the image.

The leaders of Ukraine’s four separatist regions, which are under Russian control, are already in Moscow for the ceremony.

The immediate reaction of Moscow after the so-called “referendums” according to which the integration into Russian territory was approved with a … Soviet percentage, shows that it wants to bring the West to the fore. However, Western states do not recognize the referendums as legitimate, and consider the regions to be Ukrainian.

Mr. Putin and other Russian officials have testified that once these regions are annexed, the Russian armed forces will defend them, even using nuclear weapons if deemed necessary.

The Russian president recognized the Ukrainian regions of Zaporizhia and Kherson as independent states, according to presidential decrees released by his services late Thursday, a necessary intermediate step on the eve of formalizing their annexation into the Russian Federation.

“I order the recognition of the state sovereignty and independence” of these two regions of southern Ukraine, read the two decrees signed by Mr Putin, who is preparing to finalize their annexation to his country later today, along with that of the Donetsk regions and Lugansk (east).

Russia recognized the independence of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Luhansk People’s Republic at the request of their pro-Russian separatist leaders in late February, shortly before the start of the Russian military’s invasion of Ukraine.

Earlier this month, the four regions held referendums, which Kyiv and its Western allies consider illegal, to join Russia.

After a referendum on the annexation of Crimea, a peninsula in the southern part of Ukraine, in 2014, Putin gave a speech to ask Russian parliamentarians to ratify the annexation of the territory to Russia.

However, the international community has never recognized Russia’s annexation of Crimea.

“We will never recognize referendums”

However, US President Joe Biden vowed yesterday that the US will never recognize Russian claims in Ukraine, while Washington is planning new sanctions against Moscow in view of the Kremlin’s announcement of the annexation of Ukrainian regions.

Speaking to leaders of Pacific island nations, Biden denounced referendums organized by pro-Russian authorities in regions of Ukraine, which he called “a total fraud” and claimed the results were “orchestrated by Moscow.”

The United States is working with its allies on sanctions to be imposed once Russia formally announces its annexation of Ukrainian regions, which is expected on Friday.

“The US, I want to be very clear about this, the US will never, ever, ever recognize Russian claims to sovereign territory in Ukraine,” President Biden said emphatically.

The sanctions will target “persons and entities, inside and outside of Russia, who provide support for this action,” the White House said.
“Russia’s attack on Ukraine, in pursuit of imperial ambitions, constitutes a flagrant violation of the UN Charter and the basic principles of international law,” he stressed.
