British Foreign Secretary says Putin’s strategic mistakes have damaged Russia and left him increasingly isolated globally

The British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley said today, Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s series of strategic mistakes must stop and that any use of nuclear weapons will lead to consequences.

Putin has escalated the seven-month war in Ukraine with conscription and warnings of use nuclear weapons.

Asked how Britain would react to Russia’s use of tactical nuclear weapons, Cleverley said at an event on the sidelines of the Conservative Party conference that he could not elaborate, but there will be an answer.

“Inevitably the use of nuclear weapons by any country anywhere in the world will not go unanswered,” he said. “I’m not going to discuss the nature or the scale,” he added.

Earlier, the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said Moscow did not want to engage in “nuclear rhetoric” being spread by the West after Britain’s Times newspaper reported that NATO had warned its members that President Putin might conduct a nuclear test on Ukraine’s border.

The British foreign secretary said Putin’s strategic mistakes have damaged Russia and left him increasingly isolated globally.

“We need to make it very clear that his sequence of strategic mistakes must stop,” he said. “We will continue to support Ukrainians in defending their homeland and defend international norms and standards.”
