Damian Brownie became the first person to cross the 3,450 nautical miles across the Atlantic from the American continent to Great Britain
You can call him crazy, or a visionary… In any case, the man made history, rowing for 112 days and covering a distance of 3,450 nautical miles, from New York to Galwayin Great Britain.
The 42-year-old Damian Browne started the 3,450 nautical mile journey across the Atlantic Ocean from Chelsea Piers on 14 June.
The former professional rugby player used a 20-foot boat with the name Cushlamachreepaddling and battling ocean waves for 2,686 hours.
Brownie returned safely to his home, where he was welcomed as a hero by many of his supporters and of course his family.
“I can’t explain how difficult the conditions were, obviously it’s the North Atlantic and he’s very changeable and every change I seemed to get was negative,” he told the Irish Independent.
“He was constantly hitting me with counter currents so it was incredibly stressful because you would lose distance, it would take you back and then you would try to make up the lost ground again,” the former athlete continued.
“I think the biggest impact it has is in your hands. Paddles can slip out of your hands very easily if you’re not careful,” he added.
