The meeting will take place on Monday at 10 pm Greek time
Following Russia’s annexations of four regions of Ukraine, the United Nations General Assembly will convene on Monday to discuss these developments, its spokeswoman announced.
The General Assembly, in which all 193 UN member countries participate, will meet on Monday at 22.00 (Greece time) at the request of Ukraine and Albania, reported Paulina Kubiak.
Diplomatic sources told AFP that a resolution, currently in preparation, on the annexations is expected to be discussed. At the Security Council meeting on the same issue last Friday, Russia vetoed it while China, India, Brazil and Gabon abstained. The draft of that resolution, drawn up by Albania and the US, called on all countries and organizations “not to recognize the false annexation” of the four regions and called for the “immediate, complete and unconditional” withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine .
The Americans had warned that if Russia vetoed it, they would appeal to the UN General Assembly, where each country has one, non-veto vote.
The vote will give a more concrete picture of Russia’s isolation. Some developing countries are uncomfortable because the West is focusing all its attention on Ukraine.
