Carnage in Mexico. At least 18 people, among them the mayor of the community, were killed during an armed attack yesterday Wednesday in Totolapan, in the Mexican state of Guerrero (south), a prosecutor’s source announced.

Two other people were injured in the raid, state prosecutor Sandra Luce Valdovinos told Milenio television without elaborating.

The leftist mayor of the community of 4,300 inhabitants, Mr Conrado Mendoza, he is among the victims of the broad daylight attack in this sector of Mexico, which is plagued by gang violence mainly engaged in drug trafficking.

His father, who had also served as the mayor of the community a few years ago, also fell dead, said a source close to the police.

According to Mexican media, the responsibility was taken by Los Tequileros drug-trafficking gang in the state of Jalisco, who have allied themselves with the Nea Genia cartel of Jalisco.

At least 94 mayors have been murdered in Mexico since 2000, according to the Etellekt organization.

Mexico measures over 340,000 murders — the vast majority attributed to gangs — and at least 100,000 disappearances since the controversial “war on drugs” was declared, with the deployment of the military inside the country, in 2006.
