On June 3, 2023, at Westminster Abbeythe coronation ceremony will probably take place, according to Bloomberg of King Charles III. Palace sources told the agency that they hope the ceremony will take place on that date, but it is not yet 100% certain.
Earlier reports said the ceremony would take place on the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s coronation on June 2, 1953.
Unlike his mother’s coronation ceremony, as well as previous ones, Charles’ ceremony will reportedly be “more modest”, smaller in scope.
Although Charles ascended the throne two days after Queen Elizabeth II died aged 96, the June ceremony will officially mark the start of his monarchy. The royal wife will also be crowned with him Camilla Parker Bowles.
Charles – who will be 74 in June 2003 – will become the oldest person to be crowned monarch in British history.
The coronation ritual
According to tradition, he will sit on the coronation throne, also known as Edward’s Seat, holding the ruler’s scepter and rod – representing the nation’s constitutional control – and the sovereign’s orb, representing Christendom. After the senior clergy have anointed, blessed and consecrated Charles, the crown of St. Edward will be placed on his head.
Then, like the royal consort, they will address the nation from the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
At Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953, more than 8,000 guests from 129 nations gathered at Westminster Abbey in central London, with guests – including members of the British aristocracy – seated on set-up platforms.
