Europe politically closer, despite reservations

by

The promotion of the political dialogue and the cooperation of the EU member states as well as other 17 countries, is the central idea of the political meeting in Prague.

The establishment of the European Political Community, in which the 27 EU member states and 17 third countries located in Europe and its fringes participate, is launched today at the highest political level, in Prague.

It is an idea of the French President, Emmanuel Macron, which was first presented in the 1990s by François Mitterrand, but for various political reasons did not proceed. In today’s session that starts early in the afternoon and will end in the late afternoon, 17 other leaders of countries, such as Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, the countries of the Western Balkans, the United Kingdom and Norway, are participating together with the Europeans .

As stated in the invitation letter to the participants by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, the aim of this initiative is to bring leaders together on equal terms and to promote political dialogue and cooperation on issues of common interest, such as peace and security, the economic situation, energy and climate, and migration and mobility.

Caveats…

However, it is true that many third countries, especially those of the Western Balkans, are currently wary of the establishment of the European Political Community, fearing that this forum was created to replace their full membership in the European Union.

However, both Mr. Macron and European officials categorically deny such a thing, assuring that the EU enlargement process will continue normally.

The countries that have been invited to participate in the first meeting of the European Political Community are as follows (in alphabetical order): Albania, Austria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Georgia , Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Croatia, Cyprus, Kosovo, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Czech Republic, Finland, Malta, Republic of Moldova, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom.
