Planned three-hour blackouts are planned for parts of Britain if natural gas supplies run short
The prospect of natural gas shortages in Britain has led the country to build an emergency energy plan.
The National Electricity System Operator (ESO) has warned that there could be scheduled three-hour power outages in some areas, in the “unlikely” event, he said, however, that natural gas supplies are not sufficient for the winter.
The risk of temporary outages as noted by ESO could be avoided with the help of citizens.
He urged households to sign up to an energy saving program through their supplier in a bid to reduce the risk of “switches being tripped”.
At the same time research by National Grid Gas Transmission for ESO showed that the possibility of gas supply shortages in continental Europe – as a result of Russia’s war in Ukraine – is expected to affect the UK’s ability to import.
While the gas required to power the UK’s electricity grid is expected to increase by almost 22%.
Natural gas accounts for over 40% of the UK’s electricity generation and a gas emergency can be declared if companies are unable to supply households and businesses with natural gas.
