Against the politician and journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza the youngest, who was arrested in April in Moscow on charges of spreading “fake news” about the Russian military and joining an “undesirable organization” while being labeled a “foreign agent”, was charged with utter treason, Novaya Gazeta writes. “According to what the source stated, FSB investigators believe that Kara-Murza has been cooperating with one of the NATO countries for a long time,” the TASS cable says.
Kara-Murza opposed the war in Ukraine, as reported by Reuters citing Ria-Novosti.
Later the Russian politician’s lawyer Vadim Prakhorov told TASS that the indictment is based on three facts, which are related to speeches at public events in which he criticized the Russian government, and which took place in Lisbon, Helsinki and Washington. “These speeches did not constitute any threat to the country, they were public, open criticism,” his lawyer said.
Kara-Murza denied his guilt. The High Treason Article provides for enforcement imprisonment up to 20 years.
At the beginning of August, the Russian politician and journalist was charged under the article of “exercising the activity of an undesirable organization” for organizing a conference in 2021 on the topic of supporting political prisoners at the Andrei Sakharov center in Moscow.
The second criminal prosecution was brought against him on July 13, 2022.
According to his lawyer Vadim Prakhorov, the reason for the criminal prosecution against Kara-Murza was his speech in the United States in the House of Representatives in the State of Arizona.
The 41-year-old Vladimir Kara-Murza is one of the last remaining Russian dissidents in the country.
A former journalist, Kara-Murza was a close associate of opposition politician Boris Nemtsov, who was assassinated in 2015 not far from the Kremlin, and also worked with the organization founded by former oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who lives abroad and is a critic of Vladimir Putin.
Kara-Murza claims to have been poisoned twice by Russian agentsin 2015 and 2017, due to his political activity.
On Tuesday, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) condemned Moscow for canceling the candidacy of Vladimir Kara-Murza in the Russian elections on the grounds that he had dual citizenship, Russian and British.
Kara-Murza, a Russian national, acquired British citizenship after moving to the UK with his mother when he was 15.
