According to Amnesty International, Iranian security forces unlawfully killed at least 66 people, including children
At least 82 people were killed since last Friday, in the suppression of protests organized in the city of Zahedan, in the south-east of Iran, Amnesty International claims.
“Iranian security forces unlawfully killed at least 66 people, including and children, and wounded hundreds more when they opened fire with live bullets and fired bullets and tear gas at protesters, bystanders and worshippers” in the September 30 protests in this city in Sistan-Baluchistan province. According to the international organization, “another 16 people were killed in separate incidents in Zahedan, as part of the ongoing crackdown on protests.”
Furthermore, “the evidence we collected from activists, victims’ families, eyewitnesses, photographs and videos of the protests suggests that the actual death toll in Zahedan is likely higher,” Amnesty International continues. At least three children have been killed since September 30, he added.
“Most of the victims were shot in the head, heart, neck and torso, which reveals a clear intent” by the security forces “to kill or seriously injure.”
According to the Iranian non-governmental organization Iran Human Rights, the protests were sparked by allegations that a police chief in Sabahar town raped a 15-year-old girl from the Sunni Baloch minority. This complaint was made publicly in September by the person in charge of the Friday prayer in the city of Rusk in the south of Zahedan. Protests immediately broke out and spread to the largest city in the region.
Media close to the Iranian government described the unrest in Zahedan as a “terrorist incident” that targeted a police station and led to the death of five Revolutionary Guards, the Islamic Republic’s ideological army.
These riots broke out while the climate in Iran is already tense, on the occasion of the death of Mahsha Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman who was arrested by the morality police for not observing the strict “dress code”.
