Closer cooperation with France to strengthen the energy security of the two countries was announced by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Liz Truss, who had a meeting with the president, Emmanuel Macron, on the sidelines of yesterday’s meeting of the European Political Community in Prague.

The two leaders agreed to speed up the process for the building a new nuclear reactor on British soil, called Sizewell C, by the French state-owned energy company EDF. Further cooperation on the development of nuclear energy was also agreed upon.

Finding new sources of energy has become even more urgent for the British government after yesterday’s report by the electricity system manager warned that in the event of gas shortages in winter, Britain may have to experience periodic three-hour blackouts per region.

At the same time, the renewal of the United Kingdom’s participation in the North Sea Energy Partnership, which focuses on the construction and interconnection of wind farms, was announced. The country’s participation in this cooperation was essentially frozen after Brexit.

During the campaign to claim the prime minister, Mrs. Truss had provoked reactions by commenting that “the jury is still out on whether Macron is friend or foe” of the United Kingdom.

From Prague, however, on Thursday he described the French President as a “friend” and even announced that from next year the annual British-French meeting, which has stopped being held since 2018, will be revived.

The British Prime Minister said after a meeting with President Macron on the sidelines of the European Political Community meeting that she works “very closely” with him.

As he said, beyond energy, bilateral cooperation concerns issues such as security and illegal immigration.
