Washington Post: Putin ally reacts to defeats on the Ukrainian front

Person from the close circle of the Russian president Vladimir Putin directly disagreed with him about the failures of the Russian army in Ukraine, writes The Washington Post, citing Ukrainian intelligence sources.

The paper claims that US intelligence agencies, in one of their regular briefings, informed the US president Joe Biden on the details of the disagreements and on the name of the person who disagreed with Putin, without mentioning his name.

According to the publication, the person in question conveyed to the Russian president the reservations that exist in relation to the organization of the operation, the ineffective command and the mistakes made by the military commanders. In particular, sources in US intelligence believe, people in Putin’s circle are not satisfied with the losses that Russia has and the major mistakes in the functioning of the Ministry of Defense that the war has revealed.

As the newspaper points out, incidents involving people from Putin’s “immediate entourage” who directly disagreed with him earlier had not been made known. The new information from the intelligence services, combined with recent statements by Russian officials, suggests the existence of disagreements at the highest levels of power, the newspaper writes, apparently in light of the public criticism of the Ministry of Defense by people perceived to be close to Putin such as (Chechen leader) Ramzhan Kadyrov and (paramilitary organization founder Vagner) Yevgeny Prigozhin.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the information of the American intelligence services about the person from Putin’s close circle, in which he “directly provoked Putin” “absolutely does not correspond to reality.” However, he admitted the existence of “labor disagreements” in the Russian leadership, saying that such disagreements are not a sign of a split.

In the last few weeks, the Ukrainian forces carried out two successful offensive operations, in the Kharkiv region (then the attack continued in the Severo Donetsk and Luhansk regions) as well as in Kherson. Almost immediately after the first attack, Putin announced the so-called “partial mobilization” in Russia, while the Russian authorities, within a short period of time, formally completed the annexation procedures of the occupied Ukrainian territories.
