In a statement, the media assured that it will “continue to inform about the events connected with the crisis in the prison system and the insecurity affecting the country”.
Two unidentified motorcyclists opened fire on Friday at the headquarters of a television station and left threatening messages at a newspaper in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s second-largest city and a hotbed of gang violence in the Latin American country, prosecutors said.
The “attack” was aimed at the RTS television network, he clarified via Twitter. “Unidentified persons shot at the doors of the media outlet and left leaflets with threatening content against the Extra newspaper,” added the prosecutor’s office.
The leaflets are directed at newsagents, ordering that the sale of Extra be “banned”. The perpetrators threaten to execute anyone who does not comply with this threat, as well as the director of the newspaper.
In a statement, the media assured that it will “continue to inform about the events connected with the crisis in the prison system and the insecurity affecting the country”.
In a news broadcast yesterday, RTS confirmed the attack on its premises on the night of Thursday to Friday. “They won’t succeed in silencing us, we are a network of serious journalists,” assured host Luisa Delgadillo.
The government of conservative President Guillermo Lasso reacted by condemning the “acts of violence and intimidation” against journalists and the media and expressing its “solidarity” with RTS and Extra.
Ecuador is facing an unprecedented wave of drug-trafficking violence as gangs clash mercilessly for control of the gold-rich contraband. Clashes often take place inside the country’s prisons, where some 400 inmates have been killed in nine massacres since 2021.
This week alone, 29 inmates were killed in two massacres on Monday and Wednesday at penitentiaries in Latacunga and Guayaquil. The large Guayas 1 prison in the latter is hit hardest by violence between rival gangs, with 214 inmates murdered, according to reports in the Ecuadorian press.
