The adviser to the Ukrainian president Mihailo Podoliak on Saturday appeared to admit that Kyiv was behind the explosion at the strategically important Kerch Strait bridge.

“Crimea, the bridge, the beginning. Everything illegal must be destroyed, everything stolen must be returned to Ukraine, everything occupied by Russia must be expelled” says the Ukrainian official on Twitter.

The fire on the bridge at Kerch Strait which connects the Crimean peninsula with Russia’s transport and communication network is due in blowing up a trapped vehicle with explosives, the Russian anti-terrorist commission also announced, according to the country’s news agencies, adding that the part of the bridge used by cars was damaged.

The fire, which Russia says started when a truck exploded on the highway bridge, spread to a wagon carrying fuel, cutting off Moscow from the annexed peninsula.

The bridge, which was built—at great cost—by his order Vladimir Putin, allows the transfer of Russian military equipment to the forces operating in Ukraine. It was personally inaugurated by President Putin in 2018, four years after Russia annexed the Ukrainian peninsula.

The Air Force of Ukraine celebrated earlier in a post on Telegram:

“Morning on the Crimean bridge. Fuel tanks are burning. Part of the roadway is also destroyed! Everything will be Ukraine!”
