Today, the initiative “Save the bees and the farmers! Let’s move towards a bee-friendly agriculture for a healthy environment’ became the seventh European Citizens’ Initiative to collect at least one million declarations of support from European citizens, according to its organizers.
The initiative calls on the Commission to propose legal measures to phase out synthetic pesticides by 2035, restore biodiversity and support farmers during this transition. In the coming weeks, the Commission will meet with the organizers to discuss the initiative in detail.
A public hearing will then be organized in the European Parliament. The Commission has until 7 April 2023 to submit its formal response, in which it must set out the actions it intends to take: propose legislation, take non-legislative measures or take no action.
It is the seventh European Citizens’ Initiative to collect the required one million signatures from at least seven Member States, proving that European citizens can contribute to European policy-making.
