Ten thousand Ukrainian refugees returned to their country after being hosted in France

“We estimate that almost 10,000 (Ukrainian displaced persons) returned at the end of September, according to the inactive allowance cards for asylum seekers,” the director general of Ofii explained to AFP, giving a first estimate of this wave of departures, almost eight months later the start of the war in Ukraine.

The authorities estimate the number of displaced Ukrainians who have returned to their country after being hosted in France at almost 10,000, the head of the French Office of Immigration and Integration (Ofii) Didier Lessy announced today.

To cross-check the data related to this benefit, which is given to Ukrainian refugees even if they are not asylum seekers, the authorities also noticed a decrease in the renewals of temporary residence permits, which are granted to the displaced and are renewed every six months.

Since the beginning of September, Ukrainians are gradually being asked to renew their residence permits, confirming the data of the French Office of Immigration and Integration. “This corresponds to what we have seen since the beginning of the crisis, which is that a part of the Ukrainian IDPs arrive here with the aim of returning to their country as soon as possible, while others go back and forth between France and Ukraine,” said Didier Lessy.

This wave of departures also coincides with a clear slowdown in arrivals, “180 on average” in recent days, a figure also reflected in a decline in Ukrainian students attending schools in France: almost 19,000 at the end of June against 18,500 at the end of September , he adds.

Despite this slowdown, nearly “107,000” Ukrainian displaced persons continue to be covered by Ofii’s asylum-seeker allowance, says Lessi, who estimates the amount of aid to Ukrainians since the war began at 27 million euros a month.
