The EU declares the Nicaraguan ambassador persona non grata

by

Mr Borrell announced earlier this month that there would be a “strong” response from Brussels to Managua’s decision to expel the head of the European mission, Bettina Moussait.

The European Union on Monday declared the Nicaraguan ambassador in Brussels, Soila Miller, persona non grata (“unwanted person”), in retaliation for the expulsion of the EU ambassador to Managua, announced the head of European diplomacy, Giuseppe Borel.

The European Council “agreed today (i.e. yesterday Monday) that the head of the (diplomatic) mission of the Republic of Nicaragua in the European Union will be declared persona non grata”, says a press release of the body that represents the governments of the 27.

“This is a retaliatory measure to the Nicaraguan government’s decision on September 28 to declare the head of the EU delegation in Nicaragua persona non grata. The EU considers the Nicaraguan decision unjustified,” the text added.

Mr Borrell announced earlier this month that there would be a “strong” response from Brussels to Managua’s decision to expel the head of the European mission, Bettina Moussait.

“The EU deeply regrets this unjustified and unilateral decision and rejects it,” Mr. Borel stressed in a statement released by his services.

“The EU also deeply regrets the unilateral, disproportionate and unjustified decision taken by the Nicaraguan government to sever diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of the Netherlands,” he added.

“These hostile and unjustified actions will not only harm the bilateral relations between Nicaragua and the EU and its member states, but will also lead to Nicaragua’s further international isolation,” he warned.

The international community continues to condemn the authoritarian deviation of the government of Daniel Ortega, who was re-elected in November 2021 for a 4th consecutive term in the presidency in an electoral process from which all his potential high-profile opponents were absent, having either been imprisoned or forced to be exiled.

The EU and US have imposed a series of sanctions against members of the Nicaraguan government over the past four years, citing human rights violations.

According to Nicaraguan media reports, the expulsion of the head of the European Union delegation was triggered by a statement by the EU representative to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva calling for President Ortega’s government to “restore democracy”, which sparked outrage in Managua .
