Due to safety rules regarding weight limits on Uder den Linden Boulevard, which is located in front of the Russian Embassy, the tank will likely not be displayed directly in front of the building
A damaged one Russian tank can be temporarily displayed in front of the Russian embassy building in Berlin, a court in the German capital ruled today.
The decision means that authorities in Berlin’s Mitte district are now obliged to allow a group to set up the exhibition, which is similar to those organized in Kyiv, of Russian weapons systems destroyed in the fighting.
Due to safety rules regarding weight limits on the boulevard Under den Linden, located in front of the Russian embassy, the tank will likely not be displayed directly in front of the building. But the court suggested a section from a nearby road opposite the embassy.
Mitte authorities had argued that it would be inappropriate to display the tank, as it was very likely that people died in it. He also argued that the display of the tank could affect German foreign relations and that it was not actually art.
In addition, they pointed out that the sight of the tank could disrupt traffic and upset passers-by.
However, the court ruled that the question of whether or not the chariot constituted art was irrelevant. The real issue, he ruled, is freedom of opinion.
It also ruled that traffic will not be affected and that arguments like this about foreign policy are not relevant. He also noted that the tank is expected to be on display only for two weeks.
The exhibition is the brainchild of Eno Lenze and Willand Giebel of the Berlin Story Bunker museum. They first proposed this idea in June.
Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, has backed the idea, saying it would make Germans face the “violent war of destruction” that Ukraine is enduring.
