Mayra Aguiar wins the third judo world championship

The Brazilian Mayra Aguiar, 31, won this Tuesday (11) the third world title of her career. The victory is unprecedented in Brazilian judo.

In the final, Mayra defeated Chinese Zhenzao Ma in the 78 kg category by wazari (the second most decisive blow in the sport) in the tournament held in Taskhent, Uzbekistan.

The judoka had already been champion in 2014 and 2017. It was her seventh medal in worlds. It was the third Brazilian podium in Uzbekistan. Rafaela Silva won gold in the 57 kg category. Daniel Cargnin took bronze up to 73 kg.

To win the title, Mayra defeated Croatian Petrunjela Pavic. He then passed Arena Jandeldina (Kazakhstan), current Olympic champion Hamada Shori (Japan) and Alina Boehm (Germany) to reach the final.

Mayra Aguiar is the only Brazilian judoka with three Olympic medals. She was bronze in London-2012, Rio-206 and Tokyo-2020.
