Biden: Putin made ‘miscalculations’ on Ukraine invasion

The US president added that Putin mistakenly believed that the Ukrainians would submit to the Russian invaders, which was disproved by the strong resistance they met.

US President Joe Biden said in an exclusive interview with CNN that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin made “miscalculations” on the invasion of Ukraine.

“I think he’s a rational actor who made a significant miscalculation,” the US president said of the Kremlin strongman.

Although he described him as “rational”, Biden underlined that he considers “absurd” the goals that Putin cited in the speech for the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “If you listen to the speech he gave after making that decision… He talked about the big idea… that he had to become the leader of Russia who would unite all Russian speakers. I just think it’s absurd,” said Joe Biden.

The US president added that Putin mistakenly believed that the Ukrainians would submit to the Russian invaders, which was disproved by the strong resistance they met.

“I think that in his speech, the goals were not reasonable. I think he thought, Jake, that he would be welcomed with open arms, that this was Mother Russia’s home in Kyiv, and that he would be welcomed. I think quite simply that he made a complete miscalculation,” Biden told reporter Jake Tapper.

Biden gave the interview to CNN just hours after a conference call with G7 leaders, during which Ukraine’s president stressed the need to bolster his country’s air defenses amid heavy Russian bombing.

The entire interview given by US President Joe Biden will be shown at dawn (Greece time) by the CNN television network.
