Zaporizhia: The external power line of the nuclear power plant was restored

by

The fact that the nuclear power plant was without power today for the second time in five days was described by Rafael Grossi as a “disturbing development”.

The external power supply line at the Zaporizhia nuclear plant has been restored, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, said.

Earlier today, Grossi warned that the nuclear plant, Europe’s largest, had again lost power. Although the plant’s six reactors have been shut down, a continuous supply of electricity is necessary to keep the fuel stored inside cool to prevent a potential nuclear accident.

“Our team at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Station informed me this morning that the station has lost all external power for the second time in five days,” Rafael Grossi wrote earlier, calling for a buffer zone around the station to avoid shelling near the facility.

At the same time, he pointed out that the plant is now running on emergency generators and stressed that this repeated loss of power outside the site is a “deeply worrying development”.

The head of the UN nuclear watchdog is holding talks with Kyiv and Moscow to create a buffer zone around Zaporizhia, which Russia has controlled since early March, days after it launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Russian forces fired several rockets at the city of Zaporizhia and its surroundings on Tuesday night, but did not cause significant damage.
