“This agreement removes the possibility of armed conflicts with Hezbollah.

The agreement between Israel and Lebanon to demarcate the maritime border “removes” the possibility of a new armed conflict between Lebanon’s Hezbollah and the Jewish state, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said tonight.

“This agreement removes the possibility of armed conflicts with Hezbollah.

Israel is not afraid of Hezbollah (…) but if it is possible to prevent a war, it is the government’s responsibility to do so,” Lapid said during a press conference in Jerusalem.

Top Israeli ministers want deal approved ‘urgently’

Earlier today, top Israeli ministers agreed that a US-brokered maritime demarcation deal with Lebanon should be given the go-ahead quickly, a statement issued after their meeting said, without specifying whether there would be parliamentary scrutiny. .

“It is important and urgent to reach a maritime agreement between Israel and Lebanon immediately. The relevant security ministers expressed their support for the government to move forward with the approval processes of the agreement,” the statement said.

“The deal creates a new security equation for Israel’s maritime and strategic assets. It has the potential to reduce the influence of Iran (Israel’s No. 1 enemy and Hezbollah’s main supporter) in Lebanon,” Defense Minister Benny Gantz added.

In Lebanon, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said his powerful armed group, which dominates Lebanese political life, would support the deal if it was formally approved by the Lebanese government.
