North Korea has test-fired two long-range strategic cruise missiles, with the country’s leader Kim Jong Un expressing satisfaction at the successful demonstration of his armed forces’ ability to carry out nuclear-armed strikes, North Korea’s state-run KCNA news agency reported.

The new missile launch adds to a record number of weapons tests this year that have heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula and fueled concerns that Pyongyang may go ahead with its first nuclear weapon test since 2017 and seventh overall.

Kim Jong Un expressed his “great satisfaction” with the tests, with the aim of enhancing the effectiveness of these weapons in battle, and they will be “deployed in the units of the Korean People’s Army (responsible for the use of) tactical nuclear weapons”, always according to the North Korean official news agency.

Pyongyang said earlier this week that its recent missile tests were enrolling high schools in the use of “tactical nuclear” weapons, simulating a nuclear strike on South Korea.

Mr Kim expressed his “high appreciation for the high response capabilities of our forces” tasked with using nuclear weapons, KCNA added. The test launch was another clear warning to Pyongyang’s “enemies”, he added.
