The suspect injured several more people, including a female police officer

The suspect was arrested yesterday Thursday five murders in the southeastern US, according to North Carolina Rally authorities.

The suspect, for which no information has been officially given, moreover injured several more people, among them a police officer, a member of a unit that handles trained dogs. The latter’s condition is not a cause for concern, according to Mary-Ann Baldwin, the mayor of Raleigh.

The mayor earlier spoke of a “sad and tragic day” in her city.

The first shots were heard shortly after 17:00 (local time; midnight Greek time) on a pedestrian street in the city of nearly 500,000 inhabitants, the capital of North Carolina.

A strong force of police went to the area to locate the perpetrator of the murders, according to local media.

“I saw him in front of my house, in the garden. He was holding a long-barreled hunting rifle and wearing a camouflage uniform,” Robert, an eyewitness who did not want to be named, told WRAL television.

During a press conference in the evening, the mayor clarified that “around 20:00 (03:00 Greek time), the police (…) reported that they have surrounded a suspect in a residence in the area.”

“Suspect taken into custody,” Raleigh police said on Twitter a short time later.

“Our grief is enormous”

Gun violence often mourns the US, a country that pays a heavy price for their proliferation on its soil and Americans’ characteristic ease of access to them.

Referring to this scourge, the mayor of the North Carolina capital, visibly agitated, said “we have to do more.”

“We must put an end to this senseless violence in America,” Ms. Baldwin said. “We must respond to violence with the use of firearms. Our task is enormous. And tonight, our mourning is enormous.”

In 2001 they were killed 49,000 people from spheres, and 45,000 in 2020, a year that had already set a tragic record. These numbers translate to around 130 deaths per day from bullets. More than half of the deaths are suicides.

But it is the mass shootings, the attacks with the use of firearms that have four or more victims in the terminology of the American authorities, that are of primary concern and reveal the unbridgeable gap between conservatives and progressives on what should be done in order to prevent such tragedies.

Recent American history is full of milestones mass slaughter, in all sorts of locations without exception, from workplaces to churches, from supermarkets to nightclubs, from public roads to means of transport. And, above all, in schools.

Recent massacre in florida high school, on February 14, 2018 in Parkland, sparked a massive youth-led national movement demanding tighter controls on gun purchases.

Despite the mobilization of more than a million people, the US Congress has not adopted any ambitious legislation, as many of its members are influenced by the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA), the main gun lobby in the US.

In the country where the ability to own a firearm is considered a constitutional right by millions of citizens, the only recent legislative advances have been marginal — for example, generalizing criminal record and mental health background checks before sales are approved.
