The direction we are going is not good. We have no reason to believe that the wave we are facing will limit itself, Mr Lauterbach said

The reinstatement of the obligation to use a protective mask in all indoor spaces was requested today from the state governments by the Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach, presenting the new campaign to promote vaccinations.

“The direction we are going is not good. We have no reason to believe that the wave we are facing will be self-limiting,” Mr Lauterbach stressed, noting that the number of cases continues to rise, while the numbers of deaths and admissions to intensive care units are also increasing. “That’s why it makes sense to work now with some restrictions, rather than having to react later with more stringent measures. The states have to think about it,” said the minister, referring to the legislation, which now provides that the specific decisions are taken by the federal governments.

Mr. Lauterbach also sharply criticized the management of Oktoberfest by the Bavarian authorities. “The beer festival as it happened was not a good idea at all,” he said, referring to the authorities’ failure to require mandatory tests of participants and to limit the number of people indoors. “In any case, the way it was done was not good. Now Munich and Bavaria are in a state of emergency,” he added and recommended the introduction of mandatory masks even now.

Regarding the new vaccination campaign “Protect myself”, which will start immediately, Karl Lauterbach said that 70% of people over 60 have not been vaccinated for the fourth time, but, he clarified, there is no official percentage – target .
