Critical reports in the French press about the results of yesterday’s Putin-Erdogan meeting

by

The newspaper Le Figaro described Ankara’s call for a truce as “untimely”.

In the wake of yesterday’s statement by diplomatic circles close to President Emmanuel Macron that the creation of a “gas hub” in Turkey – proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin to export natural gas to Europe – “doesn’t make sense, as the Europeans want to reduce their dependence on Russian hydrocarbons”, today’s French press is rather critical of the results of yesterday’s Putin-Erdogan meeting.

According to the newspaper Le FigaroPutin’s proposal to his Turkish counterpart to create a “gas hub” could look like a new maneuver in Moscow’s hybrid war against the West, as sanctions, as well as recent pipeline leaks Nord Stream natural gas, seriously affect Russian deliveries to the EU.

As the newspaper reports, it is clear that “Turkey is under pressure from economic interests”, characterizing Ankara’s call for a truce – made before Putin’s meeting with Erdogan – as “untimely”. Indeed, given the statement of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, during the emergency meeting via video conference of the G7 leaders on Tuesday, “that there is nothing to negotiate with Putin”

THE ‘Anchor is heavily dependent on Russian gas and oil, and Erdogan wants to increase trade with Moscow to help Turkey’s ailing economy ahead of presidential elections next June, the newspaper said. It is also noted that according to observers, his comprehensive diplomatic initiatives are mainly aimed at demonstrating his influence in the eyes of Turkish voters and appearing as an essential regional actor.

For its part, the newspaper La Tribune, notes that the Russian and the Turkish president do not hide their good understanding. They increase their meetings and conversations, each time confirming the strength of their financial ties. The newspaper also points out that their meeting yesterday in Astana was the fourth in three months. The newspaper highlights that Putin mainly took advantage of the televised conversation to propose to his Turkish counterpart the creation of a “gas hub” in Turkey.
