The boat was carrying children aged 12 to 15 who were returning from an English class.
Eleven children died on Thursday night in the wreck of the boat they were on in Cambodia and three people, its two owners and its 15-year-old operator, were arrested, police announced today.
The small boat, which carried children aged 12 to 15 who were returning from English lessonsank late Thursday night in the Mekong River in Kandal Province, southeastern Cambodia, about fifty meters from the river bank.
The authorities stopped the search for survivors this morning with the final toll of the wreck reaching 11 dead and 4 rescued, including two boat operators and two students.
The three arrested were taken to Kandal’s general police headquarters for questioning, local police chief Am Tu told AFP. “They can be prosecuted. We are looking into the charges that can be brought against them,” he noted.
Accidents like this occur frequently in Cambodia where the people living along rivers depend heavily on water transport. The government recently warned residents of rising Mekong levels due to heavy rainfall.
