In a letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ahead of the historic Chinese Communist Party (CCP) congress, Chinese President Xi Jinping stresses that it is more important than ever for Beijing and Pyongyang to strengthen communication, their unity and cooperation, as reported by the North Korean news agency KCNA.

Xi Jinping’s letter was sent in response to one Kim Jong Un had sent earlier to the Chinese president ahead of the CCP congress.

Xi Jinping is expected to secure a third five-year term as general secretary of the ruling Communist Party and president of China.

Among other things, Xi Jinping expresses in the letter his will to strengthen relations between China and North Korea and “to defend peace and stability both in the region and the rest of the world,” according to KCNA.

Beijing’s reported expression of support for Pyongyang comes amid escalating tensions on the Korean peninsula, with North Korea carrying out a barrage of ballistic missile launches and poised for its first nuclear test since 2017.

The North Korean regime has threatened South Korea with “overwhelming military countermeasures” denouncing Seoul’s “provocations” on the border between the two countries.

When asked Friday about developments on the Korean peninsula, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning called on Pyongyang and Seoul to prevent an escalation of tensions and work to create the conditions to allow dialogue to resume.
