Solz’s meeting with the Ministers of Economy and Finance without an agreement on nuclear power plants

“We will resolve the very specific practical issue very soon, within the next week,” the chancellor said on Friday, while Social Democratic Party (SPD) leader Lars Klingbeil had stressed that he expected the issue to be resolved by yesterday.

The new meeting between Chancellor Olaf Solz, Economy Minister Robert Hambeck and Finance Minister Christian Lindner on the future of the three nuclear power plants remaining in operation ended late last Sunday without result.

The debate is expected to continue on Monday.

“We will resolve the very specific practical issue very soon, within the next week,” the chancellor said on Friday, while Social Democratic Party (SPD) leader Lars Klingbeil had stressed that he expected the issue to be resolved by yesterday.

The Greens, for their part, decided yesterday at their Congress in Bonn that they will request that the Isar 2 and Neckarvestheim 2 nuclear power plants be kept in reserve until April 15, 2023. If necessary, they could be used to generate energy, pointed out in the Greens’ resolution. The Liberals (FDP), however, are in favor of keeping the three stations in operation at least until 2024 and even ask for the activation of stations that have already been closed.
