They are 11 officers, 85 female soldiers and 37 evacuees from the Azovstal steelworks in the city of Mariupol (southeast), which was under siege by Russian forces at the beginning of the Russian invasion.
One hundred and eight women, mostly members of the armed forces, have been set free in a new prisoner-of-war exchange with Russia, Andrii Yermak, an adviser to the Ukrainian presidency, announced today.
“A new large-scale exchange of prisoners of war took place today. A very touching and very special exchange: we freed 108 women from captivity,” Yermak said on Telegram.
According to him, these are 11 officers, 85 female soldiers and 37 evacuees from the Azovstal steel plant in the city of Mariupol (southeast), which was under siege by Russian forces at the beginning of the Russian invasion.
Yermak also pointed out that some of these women who were released had been detained since 2019 by pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine for their “pro-Ukrainian positions”.
One of the leaders of the pro-Russian separatists, Denis Pushilin, confirmed the exchange of prisoners, noting that 110 people held by the Ukrainians were released.
As for those who were going to return to Kyiv, “two women refused to go to Ukraine and decided to stay in Russia,” according to him.
Russia and Ukraine have held several prisoner exchanges since the Russian invasion began in February.
