The Canadian government has imposed sanctions on journalists, a media outlet and individuals it deems “complicit in disinformation” about the war in Ukraine, the foreign ministry announced in Ottawa on Monday.

“The war of the Russian regime is based on lies and deception,” argued Melanie Jolie, the head of Canadian diplomacy.

“As the number of human rights violations committed by Russia continues to grow, Canada is taking steps to counter the propaganda of those who attempt to justify them,” the minister added.

Among the targets of the sanctions are the Zvezda TV network, which is owned by the Russian Ministry of Defense, and Dmitry Viktorovich Gubiernev, a TV presenter. As well as Vladimir Maskov, a famous actor, a passionate follower of Vladimir Putin and the war in Ukraine.

Since Russia’s military invaded Ukraine on February 24, Canada has imposed sanctions on more than 1,400 individuals and entities in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.
