The new German Chancellor, Olaf Soltz, praised Greece’s efforts for economic recovery and development during a press conference he gave today in Brussels, together with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
Asked about Greece, Olaf Solz said that “we have worked very hard to cooperate with Greece in recent years. The same is true when I was Minister of Finance. People in Greece have understood that. “Now in Greece things are going in the right direction of recovery and development and that is something I appreciate very much.” He added that the new German Minister of Finance, Christian Lindner, has the same opinion as him.
Regarding the coronavirus pandemic, Olaf Solz said that all member states have understood the usefulness and opportunities offered by the Recovery Fund. He also stressed that Europe must be united in the fight against covid19 and stressed that “we must create a strong and sovereign European Union”.
Referring to the issue of Ukraine and the concentration of Russian troops on its borders, Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU is ready to tighten sanctions against Russia in case of provocation. “We want de-escalation and an end to all aggression,” von der Leyen said, adding that the EU, in agreement with its partners, was ready to take economic and financial measures against Russia. She stressed that the EU wants good relations with Russia, but that it depends on how Moscow will behave. As he said, Russia currently has a threatening attitude towards its neighbors and undermines the security of Europe.
