The operation of the Intensive Care Units during the covid-19 pandemic was analyzed during a press conference by the representatives of the Board of the Hellenic Intensive Care Unit (EETH), Anastasia Kotanidou, director of the ICU at Evangelosmos, Evangelosmos Hospital director of the ICU “Attikon”, Vassilios, Bekos, director of the ICU of the Naval Hospital of Athens.
We are saddened and disappointed to hear what is being said about ICUs, said Ms. Kotanidou, referring to non-existent allegations of patient discrimination for admission to ICUs.
There is nothing more offensive for a doctor and a nurse than to be accused of choosing cases, Mr. Bekos stressed, adding that in the ICU “the purpose is for every patient to come out alive and with a quality of life.”
Ms. Kotanidou pointed out that when the beds are not enough, the admission of patients is based on scientific criteria established by KESY. He added that in the period until finding a bed the patient enters a waiting list, noting that the number of empty beds is dynamic, it changes from time to time.
He said that during the pandemic we had an increase in the number of beds and today there are a total of 1,280 ICU beds operating in the public, military and private sectors. “The problem,” he said, “is the lack of staff,” stressing that “unfortunately there is no specialized staff for the ICU.”
Mrs. Theodorakopoulou explained how the electronic platform of EKAB and EKEPY for ICU beds works, which is seen by all doctors. The benefit of its operation is that no time is wasted when emptying a bed, he pointed out.
Regarding mortality in ICUs, Ms. Kotanidou said that the numbers are really high and this is due to the low vaccination coverage and does not only concern Greece. The average mortality in our country is estimated at 50-60%.
