Members of his team donald trump, when he was in the presidency of the USA, they prevented health workers from giving information about covid-19 in order not to spoil the “optimistic narrative” of the former president, according to a parliamentary report published yesterday Monday.

Senior officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) even told investigators that members of the Trump administration intimidated staff members and tried to rewrite their reports to align with the president’s statements, which downplayed the pandemic.

Researchers interviewed dozens of former and current CDC officials, as well as high-ranking government officials, for this 91-page report released by a congressional committee on the covid-19 crisis.

The government panel describes in this report how Health Department officials, appointed by Trump, tried to control the CDC’s weekly science journal, the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, by interfering with or censoring articles they considered that they harm the American president.

These officials tried “alter the content, to counter or delay the publication’ of 18 of those weekly reports, as well as a health warning, which they achieved five times, according to the parliamentary report.

The investigative committee “showed that the previous administration politically interfered in an unprecedented manner in the federal government’s response to the pandemic, thereby undermining public health in favor of the former president’s political goals,” said committee chairman Jim Clyburn, a Democrat.

Previous reports have already mentioned the Trump administration’s attempts to censor high-ranking health officials or pressure the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to issue emergency approval for the use of hydroxychloroquine. Trump believed that the drug used against malaria was a treatment for covid-19, despite evidence to the contrary.

However, the Republicans rejected the conclusions of the report, calling it partisan, and pledged to conduct their own investigation if they win a majority in both houses of parliament after November’s midterm elections.
