The goal of the National Biodefense Strategy is to “prevent outbreaks and biological incidents before they happen,” whether they are natural, intentional, or accidental.
US President Joe Biden today launched a plan to deal with biological threats and prepare for the next pandemic after Covid-19 claimed the lives of more than 1 million people in the United States.
Biden signed three biodefense documents aimed at defining the strategy and implementation of a plan to be implemented the next time a virus spreads widely in the US.
THE National Biodefense Strategyreleased by the White House, states that the U.S. must address “the accidental release of biological agents and the threats posed by terrorist organizations the adversaries seeking to use biological weapons».
A memorandum signed by Biden creates a “coordinating structure for biodefense” between government agencies, under the supervision of the White House.
U.S. intelligence agencies are tasked with monitoring for threats and ensuring the U.S. is “constantly adapting to this evolving landscape” by holding annual exercises, a senior official said, outlining the new plan.
Congress is also being asked to approve $88 billion over five years for pandemic preparedness and biodefense. That request remains pending in Congress as lawmakers wrangle over government spending.
The goal is to “prevent outbreaks and biological events before they happen,” whether from natural causes, intentional or accidental, the same official added.
The plan also aims to recruit, train, and retain a strong, permanent health care workforce in all 50 States to respond to biological threats.
