“The situation in the area of the Special Military Operation can be described as tense,” the new commander of Russian forces in Ukraine, Sergei Surovykin, said in an interview – Ukraine in Darkness

The new commander of Russian forces in UkraineSergey Surovikin, admitted tonight that the military situation is “tense”, especially in the area around the Kherson, at South.

“The situation in the area of the Special Military Operation can be described as tense,” he said in an interview with state-run Rossiya-24 television. “The enemy is constantly trying to attack the positions of Russian soldiers,” continued Surovikin, who took over as head of operations ten days ago. As he said, such attacks occur mainly “in the areas of Kupyansk, Liman and Mykolayiv-Krivii Rykh”.

Surovikin announced that the Russian army is preparing to evacuate the city of Kherson, the capital of the Kherson province.

“The Russian army will above all ensure the safe evacuation of the population” from Kherson where Ukrainian strikes against political infrastructure “immediately threaten the lives of residents”, he added.

The Russian-appointed commander of Kherson confirmed soon after that “certain citizens” will be removed, invoking the “danger” of an attack by Ukrainian forces. In a video message, Vladimir Saldo said residents of four towns would be evacuated from the banks of the Dnieper River because of the risk of a nearby dam being destroyed by Ukrainian shelling.

Surovikin also asserted that “the Ukrainian regime is attempting to break our defenses” by mobilizing “all its reserves” for this counterattack. THE situation is “very difficult”, especially in the city of Kherson, because of Ukrainian strikes against “social, economic and industrial infrastructure,” he continued.

Among the infrastructure damaged by the bombings are the dam of the Kakhovka power station and the Anonovsky bridge connecting the north and south banks of the Dnieper. Due to the damage, there are problems in the electricity supply and in supplying the residents with food and water. Surovikin even spoke of an “immediate threat to the lives of the residents”.

Future actions by the Russian military regarding the city of Kherson itself “will depend on the military situation,” he continued, saying there was a need “to protect the lives of civilians and Russian soldiers to the maximum extent.”

“We do not rule out making a very difficult decision,” he concluded.
