The WHO has issued a warning and recommended the withdrawal of four cough and cold syrups produced by Indian pharmaceutical company Maiden Pharmaceuticals Ltd, which “may be linked” to the deaths recorded in Gambia.
Indonesian authorities announced today that they are suspending the sale and prescription of all syrups after death this year almost 100 children from acute kidney failure.
The decision came after an investigation was launched last week into the unexplained rise since August in acute cases renal failure in this Southeast Asian country.
Moreover, cough syrups manufactured in India appear to be responsible for the deaths of nearly 70 children in The Gambia also from acute kidney failure.
“So far we have been informed of 206 cases in 20 provinces and 99 deaths,” said Indonesian Health Ministry spokesman Syahril Mansyur.
“For precautionary reasons“The ministry asked health professionals not to temporarily prescribe liquid medicines or syrups (…) and asked pharmacies to suspend the sale of syrups (…) until the investigation is completed,” he added.
Cases of acute kidney failure in children have increased since August, the official explained, while until then there were one to two per month in Indonesia.
“From the end of August 2022, the ministry and the association of pediatricians received more and more information about cases of acute renal failure,” he explained.
The World Health Organization issued a warning earlier this month and recommended the recall of four cough and cold syrups made by Indian pharmaceutical company Maiden Pharmaceuticals Ltd that “may be linked” to the deaths recorded in The Gambia.
The WHO pointed out that an analysis of four Maiden syrups found “unacceptable” levels of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol, substances that can prove toxic and lead to kidney failure.
Indonesia’s health safety agency stressed, however, that these syrups are not imported into the country.
Most cases of acute kidney failure identified in Indonesia involved children under 5 years of age.
