Almost 20 years after the electronic surveillance of the ceasefire line came to the table, the Cyprus Ministry of Defense took the first and decisive step to implement a project vital to the security of the Republic of Cyprus. As “Kathimerini Kyprou” has repeatedly written in the last 2 years, the strengthening of security on the green line will be done through Israeli eyes and a system that is already used by other countries, including them and the USA, which have installed it in border with Mexico. The electronic surveillance system based on the agreement signed on Thursday in Nicosia, will be in full development in 3 years. However, in the meantime, the system will give an idea of the control system, which will be manned by National Guard personnel. The system will cost the Republic of Cyprus 27.5 million euros and the purchase agreement was signed on behalf of the state of Israel by Brigadier General Yair Kulas and Director General of the Ministry of Defense Andreas Loukas.
The invisible eyes
The surveillance system that the Republic of Cyprus will purchase is that of the Israeli company Elbit Systems Ltd, which specializes in the manufacture of electronic defense products with a wide range of activities around the world. According to the company’s profile on its official website, Elbit Security Systems “specializes in the development, manufacture, delivery and installation of security solutions, such as: day-night surveillance sensors, large-medium and short range, surveillance vehicles with EO sensors and radar , small UAS, electronic and optical intrusion detection fences, C4I security centers, management of IP security surveillance networks. The systems that are in the company’s range are intended for: Border security, coast guard, airport security and perimeter security.
The Control System (BCR) 2000
The same system that will be placed along the green line has been selected by the Israeli police for control at sea and on land, Lithuania, the USA, Brazil. Based on the capabilities provided by the manufacturer, the Surveillance System (BSS) provides real-time regional surveillance, early warning, targeting and management of patrol missions. BSS also improves land and sea security, regional control and protection, enabling full real-time connectivity across the entire security array. These solutions allow for the optimal coordination of ISR efforts across all operational areas and along surveillance lines, supporting stable control centers, developed command posts, and tactical patrol personnel. The system consists of fixed infrastructures which will be placed along the green line, in selected points while there will be the possibility of covering other points with the mobile components of the system. The information collected by the electronic eyes will end up in real time at the system control center which will be evaluated by the operators and will be forwarded to the competent services.
Perimeter Security
The system will be able to monitor remote and uninhabited areas, mountainous terrain that usually lack infrastructure. The trump card of the system are the C4I portable surveillance devices, manual UAV for day and night aerial surveillance (SkylarkTM), mobile application software, third generation handheld thermal imaging for commander (CORAL), night vision goggles Image Intensifier for the crew. Regarding the unmanned parts of the system, the collected data are submitted for processing to the integrated control console of the vehicle.
