‘Disgrace’ and ‘sadness’; See leaders’ reactions to Liz Truss’ resignation

by

Reactions to the resignation of Liz Truss as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on Thursday (20) were almost immediate. Some of them leaned towards acidity, following weeks of humiliating frying for the Brit in Parliament and in the press.

This was the case with the speech of Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, who said that “the United Kingdom has never known greater disgrace as prime minister”.

On social media, a kind of competition between Truss’ political survival and the lifespan of a lettuce broadcast live showed the vegetable exulting in its victory, celebrated next to a bottle of prosecco.

Other names were more parsimonious, such as French President Emmanuel Macron and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who expressed sadness at the prime minister’s departure. See the ad’s reaction below:

I thank Prime Minister Liz Truss for her partnership on a variety of issues, including holding Russia accountable for its war against Ukraine. We will maintain our close cooperation with the British government as we work together to complete the global challenges facing our nations.

We want, above all, stability. On a personal level, I am always sad to see a colleague leave.

You see that the Prime Minister of England has resigned. And she resigned because she is not big enough to face the economic problem that England has.

If I had known that organizing the summit could lead to the resignation of the prime minister, I would have organized it sooner.

I think stability is very important. We would like to see the British system’s ability to choose a successor as quickly as possible, during these times when a major war is on its way to Europe.

I had good contact with her (…) so I’m annoyed for her personally. We agreed on a number of points of view and I look forward to working with my next colleague.

Our country has always had a special relationship with the UK, regardless of the party affiliation of our president or their prime minister. This will continue no matter who the UK chooses.
