The anger of the Italians was caused by the cover of the new issue of the magazine “The Economist”, entitled “Welcome to Britain”.

It is characteristic that on the cover of the magazine there is a sketch, which depicts the outgoing Prime Minister of Britain, Liz Trusswith a vestment reminiscent of a Roman centurion.

Liz Truss, as seen in the sketch, wears a helmet, holds a pizza for a shield and a spaghetti fork instead of a spear.

Italy’s ambassador to London, Inigo Lambertini, slammed the magazine, noting that it was “unfortunately” inspired by “the most trivial stereotypes” about Italy.

“Although pasta and pizza are the most sought-after foods in the world, as the second most important industrial country in Europe, on your next cover we would suggest you choose so for a change something from our sectors of aerospace, biotechnology, automotive industry or the pharmaceutical industry”, the Italian ambassador wrote in a letter to the magazine, which he also published on Twitter.

The British weekly cites Italy as an example to avoid, writing about the political and economic crisis in the United Kingdom.

“Political instability, which used to be a hallmark of Italy, has thoroughly infected Britain,” the editorial says, adding that “low growth and subservience to markets” are now also common to the two countries.
