The government decided to repeat the elections in 431 constituencies (2,256 electoral divisions) in Berlin, after the opinion of the Federal Election Commission on extensive irregularities in the process.
The government’s proposal is expected to be sent to the federal parliament on November 7 and a decision will be made on November 11.
Where the process is repeated, there should be exactly the same ballots in order to “ensure the legal certainty of the election result of September 26, 2021 and to respect the 70% vote that went to the ballot box,” party representatives said.
It is not clear how the run-off might affect the election result, but in theory it is even possible that fewer federal parliamentarians are elected from Berlin or that the state government changes.
