Macron: France to stand in solidarity with the parents of 12-year-old Lola

“When we are faced with extreme evil, we realize that this is possible in our society,” the French president told reporters

France must stand in solidarity with the parents of the 12-year-old girl who was found dead last week inside a suitcase outside her family’s home in Paris, the country’s president said today Emmanuel Macroncalling the killing an “act of extreme evil.”

It was Macron’s first public statement on the death of little Lola, whose parents he met with earlier this week.

“When we are confronted with extreme evil, we realize that this is possible in our society”he told reporters after the summit in Brussels. “Above all, I think of Lola’s parents, her brother and her half-brother, the pain of this family who is incredibly decent and united right now and I think what is needed first and foremost is respect and affection of the nation”he added.

The murder of Lola has become a source of political tension. The opposition parties, taking advantage of the profile of the attacker, who was an irregular immigrant, call for a tougher immigration policy. This woman, a 24-year-old originally from Algeria, was arrested on Monday and charged with murder, rape and torture.

This afternoon a memorial service was held for the girl in Fouqueray, northern France, where the child’s parents are from. At the community center many people, often with tears in their eyes, left flowers and cards and signed the book of condolences, in front of a large portrait of Lola. “It’s horrible. I’m shocked, as are most people here. I pray this never happens again. Really, we have to do something. How could a woman do that?’ asked Caroline Lechene, who went to Fouqueray from neighboring Cabret to honor the child’s memory.
