Her support for Rishi Sunak to become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom was provided in an article in the Daily Telegraph on Sunday afternoon by Suella Braverman.

This is the Minister of the Interior of the Tras government who resigned one day before the resignation of the Prime Minister, but also one of the most influential representatives of the right wing of the Conservative Party.

Ms Braverman is calling on the party not to be “naive” and not to indulge in “fantasy”, noting that Mr Sunak is the only junior who can unite the Conservative family.

Her support is considered a significant blow for him Boris Johnsonwho appears to be struggling to muster the support of 100 Conservative MPs, as needed to enter the succession race.

The right wing of the party was seen as Mr Johnson’s home turf as he is the politician who delivered Brexit, while Ms Braverman had backed Liz Truss against Rishi Sunak in the final showdown of the previous succession race.

However, many key figures in the Tories’ right-wing and hard-line Brexiteer group have now declared their support for Mr Sunak. Between them Cammy Bedenock, Steve Baker, Steven Barclay, Teresa Villiers, Geoffrey Cox, David Davies and Lord Frost.

By early Sunday afternoon public statements of support from Conservative MPs for Rishi Sunak had reached 140, while Boris Johnson stood at around 60 to 65.

If only one candidate gathers the support of 100 MPs by 2pm on Monday, then he will be crowned the new leader of the party and the country. Otherwise the winner will be chosen from the base of the Conservative Party.
