Am I allowed to be this happy? Well, I’m allowed”, said the presenter, causing a stir as she did not maintain an impartial attitude
Strong reactions have been caused by the celebratory comments of a BBC presenter, who did not hide her enthusiasm on air for Boris Johnson’s withdrawal from the race to succeed the Conservative party.
In particular, BBC presenter Martine Croxall withdrew after being accused of not maintaining an impartial stance on the matter. The presenter smiled on The Papers shortly after it was announced that Johnson was withdrawing from the Tory leadership bid and said:
“Well, this is all very exciting, isn’t it? Hello and welcome to see what the papers will bring us tomorrow. Am I allowed to be this happy? Well, I’m allowed,” said the presenter.
Some viewers, including several Tory MPs, reacted to the video of her remarks posted on social media, complaining that it showed bias.
Excerpts from the presenter’s comments have since gone viral and sparked angry reactions on social media, both from users and several Tory MPs who complained she showed bias. In fact, some even demanded the dismissal of the 53-year-old journalist.
In a statement the broadcaster said: “BBC News is urgently reviewing last night’s edition of The Papers on the News Channel for a possible breach of impartiality. It is imperative that we maintain the highest editorial standards. We have procedures in place to meet our standards and those procedures have been activated.”
