Ukraine: Zelensky criticizes Israel’s neutrality in the face of Russia-Iran “alliance”

This alliance simply wouldn’t exist if your politicians had made a decision at that time. The decision we were asking for,” said Zelensky

THE Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky criticized today the neutrality observed by Israel since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, an invasion which, according to him, enabled an “alliance” between Moscow and Tehran mainly by the delivery of Iranian drones to the Russian military.

“This alliance simply would not have existed if your politicians had made a decision at that time. The decision we were asking for,” Zelensky said in a speech at a conference organized by the Haaretz newspaper, referring to Israeli support for Russia, which Kyiv has repeatedly called for.

According to the Ukrainian president, this rapprochement between Moscow and Tehran became possible after “the (Israeli) decision not to ‘bother’ the Kremlin” in 2014 after Russia annexed Crimea in order, according to him, to maintain good diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Zelensky’s speech came days before Israel’s parliamentary elections, scheduled for Nov. 1, with the election outcome still uncertain.

THE Ukrainian president accused Iran today that he agreed to deliver drones to Russia in exchange for “Russian assistance to Iran’s nuclear program.” “Probably, that’s what their alliance is all about,” he argued.

“We still do not have a modern and effective anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense system that could protect our airspace. That’s why Russia hopes to use terror in the air to offset losses on the ground,” he said, saying that “in eight months of war, Russia has used almost 4,500 missiles against us.”

Zelensky also claimed that Russia has ordered “about 2,000 Iranian Shaheds,” those kamikaze drones, to support its invasion of Ukraine, following military setbacks in the field since early September.

The Ukrainian president did not specify whether that figure includes a new order or the total number of Iranian drones Moscow has bought from Tehran, some of which have already been used to hit energy infrastructure in particular, according to Kyiv.

According to Zelensky, “Iranian instructors went to teach the Russians how to use these drones” before using them in Ukraine, he added.

Earlier today, Mr Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz spoke to his Ukrainian counterpart, Oleksii Reznikov, telling him that Israel would not supply “weapons systems” to Ukraine, two days after Moscow warned against providing Israeli arms to Kyiv.
