Middle East: Amnesty International calls on International Criminal Court to investigate war crimes

At least 49 Palestinians, fighters and civilians, including children, were killed from August 5 to 7 in hostilities between the Israeli army and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad organization in the Gaza Strip.

Human rights group Amnesty International is today calling for an International Criminal Court (ICC) investigation into possible “war crimes” committed by Israel’s military and Palestinian militants in August’s hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

At least 49 Palestinians, fighters and civilians, including children, were killed from August 5 to 7 in hostilities between the Israeli army and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group in the Gaza Strip, an enclave under Israeli blockade since 2007.

Amnesty International estimates that a total of 31 civilians were killed, according to its briefing note released today, entitled “They were nothing but children: evidence of war crimes committed during Israel’s August 2022 offensive on the Gaza Strip.” ».

The NGO examined three episodes in particular. It concluded that two Israeli attacks killed six Palestinian civilians, including children, even though Israeli authorities “boasted about the ‘accuracy’ of their operation”.

In the third case examined by Amnesty, seven Palestinian civilians were killed in an “attack” that was “apparently carried out by an unguided rocket fired by Palestinian armed organizations”.

The Islamist movement Hamas, in power in the Gaza Strip, said it was on the sidelines of the escalation, in contrast to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the second most powerful Islamist movement in the Palestinian enclave of 2.3 million residents.

“The latest Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip lasted just three days, but it was enough to cause new trauma and new devastation for its beleaguered population,” said Amnesty International’s Secretary-General, Anies Kalamar.

“The three deadly attacks we examined must be investigated as war crimes; all victims of the unlawful attacks and their families deserve justice and reparation,” he adds.

The ICC announced in 2021 that it had begun investigating possible war crimes committed in the Palestinian Territories since 2014, an initiative rejected by Israel — which is not a member state of the Court — but praised by the Palestinians.

Israel and Palestinian armed groups have been involved in four wars since the Islamist movement Hamas took power in the Gaza Strip in 2007.
